The goal of the Penn State Population Research Institute is to encourage, organize and support innovative research and training in the population sciences to address U.S. and international population problems. This proposal is for a three-year continuation grant to support developing country training and research activities. This grant is in response to the Foundation's goal of enhancing human resources and knowledge to address developing country population problems through population training and policy-relevant research. The major objective of the grant are: 1) to support cost-shared predoctoral trainee stipend and tuition charges for developing country students to obtain dual Ph.D. degree credentials in demography; 2) to advance collaborative policy-relevant international population research with developing country scholars and institutions, including developing country Ph.D. program alumni; and 3) to provide developing country students the with the opportunity to acquire unique training in the application of geographic information system and spatial modeling methods for population-environment analysis.
